The Georgians

The Stuart King James I became very unpopular and people didn't want England to
be Catholic anymore. Parliament offered
the throne to a man called William of Orange who lived in Holland.

The Last Stuarts
1689 - 1714

1689
Parliament passes a law which says that Catholics cannot rule.
Parliament offers the English throne to the Protestant William and Mary who come from Holland with an army.
There is no fighting. William and Mary are welcomed in to the country.
King James runs away to France.
1694
The Bank of England starts.
1702
William dies and Anne (who was James' daughter) becomes Queen.
1707
The Act of Union is passed. This means that England and Scotland joined together to become Great Britain.
The Union Jack becomes Britain's flag.
1714
Queen Anne dies.

Queen Anne had 17 children but they all died before she did this meant
that there are no heirs to the throne.

Parliament offered it to Anne's nearest relative who was George of Hanover (Germany).
He became King George I.

George of Hanover becomes King George I.
1715
The 1st Jacobite rebellion tries to put the Stuarts back on the throne.
Their army is defeated in Scotland.
1721
Sir Robert Walpole becomes Britain's first Prime Minister.
1727
George I dies and his son becomes King George II.
1740
Steel making is discovered.
1745
The second Jacobite rebellion starts.
1746
The Jacobites are defeated at the battle of Culloden. Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) flees to France.
1753
The British Museum opens.
1755
The British start a seven year war against the French.
The French lose lots of their foreign lands to the British.
1757

The British (who are led by Clive of India) defeat the French and Indian armies at Plassey.
This means The East India Company can run India for the British.
The first canal in Britain opens.

1760
George II dies and his son becomes King George III.
1768
Captain Cook sails for Australia.
1772
Slavery becomes illegal in Britain.
1775
The American War of Independence starts against Britain.
1776
America declares independence from Britain.
1780
The Industrial Revolution begins.
1783
American War of Independence with Britain ends.
The first steam powered cotton mill opens.
1788
The first convict ships are sent to Australia.
1789
The French Revolution begins.
1796
A vaccination against small pox is discovered by Edward Jenner.
1799
The French Revolution ends with Napoleon Bonapart in charge of the country.
1801
Ireland becomes part of Great Britain.
The first census puts the population of Britain at eight million.
1803
War between France and Britain begins.
1804
Richard Trevithick built the first steam train.
1805
Lord Nelson defeats the French at the Battle of Trafalgar.
1807
The British abolish the slave trade.
1811
King George III is declared insane.
The country is run by Parliament and his son.
1815
The Duke of Wellington defeats the French at the Battle of Waterloo.
Napoleon surrenders to the British.
1820
George III dies and his son becomes King George IV.
1825
The World's first passanger railway opens between Stockton and Darlington.
1829
Robert Peel starts the first police force in London.
1830
William IV becomes King.
1837
William dies and the 18 year old Victoria becomes Queen.
