The Victorians
The Victorians lived during the reign of Queen Victoria.
She was Queen from 1837 to 1901.



During Queen Victoria's reign Britain became the richest and most
powerful country in the world. The British Empire was the biggest
empire the world had ever seen.
It was a time of huge change in Britain.

Victorian Time Line
1837
Victoria becomes Queen at the age of 18.
The Houses of Parliament are built in London.
1838
The first Photograph is taken in France.
1840
Queen Victoria marries Prince Albert.
The fist postage stamp (The Penny Black) is
used in Britain.
1841
The Great Western Railway from London
to Bristol opens.
1842
Britain defeats China in the Opium War.
The Mines Act is passed and it is now against the law for children under 10 to work down mines.
1843
Charles Dickens publishes A Christmas Carol and the book sells out in only 6 days.
1844
The Factory Act is passed and this stops children between 8 and 13 years old from working more than 6 hours a day.
1845 - 1850
A potato famine kills 800,000 people in Ireland. Many Irish go to live in Britain and America.
5000 miles of railway track is built in Britain.
The first postboxes are built.
Workhouses open to try and help people in Britain who are very poor.
1851
20 million people are now living in Britain.
First library opens in Winchester.
First public toilet opens in London.
Ice Cream is invented in America.
The Great Exhibition opens at Crystal Palace.
1854
A cholera epedemic leads to demands for clean water supplies and sewage systems in Britain's cities.
1856
Britain defeats Russia in the Crimean War.
There is now a police force in every town in Britain.
1858
The British government takes over the rule of India from The East India Company and Victoria is crowned the Empress of India.
1861
Prince Albert dies.
The American Civil War begins.
1863
The London Underground opens.
The Football Association is founded.
1864
Children under 10 years old are banned from working as chimney sweeps.
1868
The last public hanging takes place.
1869
The first Sainsbury's shop opens in London.
1871
The first Bank Holidays take place.
1872
The first FA Cup Final is played.
1876
The telephone is invented.
1877
The first ever recording of a human voice is made.
1878
Electric lights are used on the streets of London for the first time.
1880
The Education Act says that children between 5 and 10 years old must go to school.
1881
The Natural History Museum opens in London.
1883
Britain takes control of Egypt.
1887
Britain sets up a colony in Nigeria in Africa.
1887
The record player is invented.
1891
Free education start for children aged form 5 to 13.
1896

The speed limit on British roads is raised from
4 mph to 14 mph.

1901
40 million people are now living in Britain.
Queen Victoria dies and her son becomes King Edward VII.
