The Morning By The River

On a bright and sunny Thursday morning, the year 5’s and 6’s took a trip to Ash Hill to do some experiments on a small part of the river Torridge.

We left school at 9.00. We took a five minute drive up the road to Ash Hill. The river here is a small part of the river Torridge. We went there to do some experiments about the depth and the flow of the water.

When we got there we saw that some of the parts of the river were eroded and that there was a big meander. We collected poles that had a 10 metre string in between to measure the flow, ruler metres to measure the depth, tape measures to measure the width of the river and oranges to measure the speed of the river.

First of all we put the 10 metre poles in the water and we measured the speed of the water with the stop watch and an orange. We found that in some places the water was flowing quicker than in other places.
The next thing we did was we measured the width and the depth of the water, we found that as you out to the middle of the river it was deeper than at the banks of the river.

It was a great trip to go on and I learnt a lot about the river and different parts of it.
