The English Civil War
The following time line was researched and drawn up by children in Class 5.

1625

King James I died
And his son
Charles became king.

Charles and parliament argue about the money being spent on a war with Spain.

1629

Charles closes Parliament

Charles taxes rich people and puts his enemies in prison.

1637

Charles tried to make the Scots worship like the English.


The Scots sent an army into England

1640

Charles brought parliament back so they could raise money to fight the Scots.

Charles sent soldiers to arrest 5 MPs who would not help him.
Parliament decided to fight the king and both sides started to build armies.

1642

The Battle of Edgehill was won by the king’s army.


Cromwell began to train a New Model Army for parliament.

1644

The Scots joined parliament.

The king’s army was defeated at the battle of Marston Moor.
The king’s army was defeated at the battle of Naseby.
Charles ran away to Scotland.

The Scots sold Charles to parliament.
Charles escapes and ran away to the Isle of Wight..
Charles planned to get the Scots to help him but he was handed back to parliament.
The Scots sent an army to help Charles.
The Scots and what was left of the king’s army were beaten at the battle of Preston Gate.

1649

Charles is tried for treason and executed in London.

The Irish and Scottish said that Charles' son Charles II should be king.
Parliament’s army defeated the Irish.

1651

Parliament’s army defeats the Scottish at Dunbar and Worcester.

Charles II ran away to France and England became a Commonwealth led by Oliver Cromwell who was called Lord Protector
